What Causes High Fever Along With Neck Pain After A Heat Stroke?

My son n law went to er with Dx of heat stroke, temp 103.9, wbc s 14, he has had ice packs ice water baths etc temp still 103.3, he had some n/v, pale, c/o back and neck pain, states neck is not really stiff ...it s been almost 5 hours, and no break in temp, I m not sure how long he had temp before he went to er..He has been admitted to ccu, he responding etc...i think he needs spinal tap, how long can you run that kind of temp without damage of some kind My daughter had meningitis as a baby, so I tend to always think about that first

Hello,

High fever is common in heatstroke and it seems your son in law is having proper treatment. He is having ice packs and probably the doctors are also giving him intravenous infusions to substitute the fluids and the electrolytes he lost.
A spinal tap is not indicated in heatstroke so I think you do not need to worry. He just needs to be under the care of the doctors as he already is and the fever will go down soon. A patient may be for hours with very high fever without many risks but on the other hand, heatstroke can be a serious condition and each patient needs to be evaluated and treatment adjusted according to his specific needs.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
