What Causes High Calcium Levels?

I went to do a Physical, EKG and blood tests for a future job. The Calcium level results are 11.1 and the company states that is high. They will not approve me for clearance unless I have something from a medical doctor stating why my calcium level is high and that it is not from a serious health issue. I am a very active 56 year old female and I hike and backpack in the mountains often. I also am a Spartan course racer. Do not understand why my Calcium level is too high or higher than what is considered normal. I did take Calcium supplements and have stopped taking those as it seems I do not need them any longer. I need some type of explanation of why my Calcium level is high. Can you help with this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have high calcium levels in your blood, do not take calcium supplements. Avoid food rich in calcium like bananas, yogurt, cheese, milk, ice creams.

High calcium levels may cause kidney stones, weaken bones, may interfere with the heart & bran function.

Cancer can cause high level of calcium in the blood due to bone breakdown.

You are suggested to get physically examined by a GP, get all the blood and imaging tests done to detect multiple myeloma, leukemia or overactive parathyroid gland to stay on the safer side.

Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
