Hi,

I am sorry for the situation your grandmother is in.

There are various factors causing hiccups including:
- stomach issues: further evaluation with GI specialist is advised
- neurological problems: central (brain lesions); local (phrenicus nerve issues).

If I was her caring doctor would advise to get further consultation with specialists to determine the right cause and appropriate treatment.

For the moment, I advise to:
- give her cold water when she starts hiccuping
- ask her to take a deep breath by using her nostrils, then, close the mouth and keep the breath in for a few seconds. Then, ask to release breath.

All the best!
