What Causes Hiccups And Abdominal Bloating?

I occasionally have a strong sense that my food is not going down toward the end of a meal, which then leads to hiccups, a bloating feeling (that if I could just belch I would be ok), along with excessive salivation. I don t have any (or very little) heartburn, but do experience some considerable discomfort roughly behind the middle to top of my sternum. The only thing that seems to help is to spit out all saliva, not swallowing anything, walking around, and trying to belch. This can go on for an hour or more. What can cause this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Though you may not have any heart burn, difficulty swallowing, bloating and excess salivation are all possible symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease. Burning discomfort does not necessarily occur, some persons have a cough only.

You can try a course of reflux medication and see if this helps. It can take 5 to 7 days, in some cases for the medication to have an effect, that is Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Pepcid, and Zantac. Diet changes that are used with reflux, may also help like:

(1) reducing portion sizes- use small frequent meals instead of large meals

(2) reduce the use of citrus, fatty, spicy foods

(3) reduce caffeine, mint, chocolate, tomatoes

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
