What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding And Abdominal Pain?

My daughter announced that she will be having her ovaries removed on November 1st, due to having an ovarian cyst, which apparently has grown to the size of a lemon. She also experiences severe pain and heavy bleeding occasionally. She is 32 years old. She does not seem to have many answers about the procedure and risk, and she went to the doctor on her own, so we have not been able to get direct information. She won t tell us anything about what she has been told, so we don t know if she is having one or both ovaries removed, or including the Fallopian tubes or what. She said that she had an ultrasound which determined that she had the cyst. She said that they told her that she will stay in the hospital for two days, so I assume that she will be having an incision. I don t believe that she is aware that she will go into to menopause after the surgery or that she will need HRT. Also, I am wondering about the likelihood of future problems with her uterus as both my mother and myself had hysterectomies. She wants to have the least invasive surgery possible, she says, but I m not sure that all of the risks and implications have been explained to her. Also, I am concerned that she will not want to take hormones, if needed.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hi,

An ovarian cyst of size of lemon needs to be surgically removed due to risk of malignancy in future. Since, the cyst is in one ovary, there is no need to remove the other ovary. Fallopian tube removal may not be required since cyst is involving the ovary only.

HRT may not be required if one ovary is intact since it can secrete all hormones required by body. Severe bleeding and abdominal pain are probably due to ovarian cyst.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
