What Causes Heavy Periods Inspite Of Being On Birth Control Pills?

Hi I started taking birth control pills (azurette) for the first time in my life once my period started. It usually last 5-7 days with the first and last two days being less but the days in between heavy bleeding. It is now 13 days since my period started and I am having daily brownish/pinkish discharge (thick). Is this the birth control pills or is there something else wrong? In addition I have lately experienced bleeding (heavy or maybe it just seems dramatic) during sex and prior to starting on the pille getting my period every 14th day instead of 28th. Hope you can help

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Azurette contains both ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel which is used to prevent unwanted pregnancy from unprotected sexual intercourse. It may cause irregular uterine bleeding that may short or prolonged in duration, heavy or scanty in nature. It may cause vaginal dryness that leads to bleed during sexual activities.

Other side effects of Azurette are spotting or break through bleeding between periods, abnormal vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, sweating, changes in appetite, dry mouth, fatigue, unusual tiredness, weakness, changes in body weight, mood swings, depression, acnes, facial hair growth, changes in sleep patterns, impaired wound healing, vaginal yeast infections, breast tenderness and enlargement, changes in sexual drive, allergic reaction etc. Any of these side effects persists for long or bother you, then you should consult your doctor immediately for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
