What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Hi. I am getting regular but heavy periods with blood clots in 2nd and sometimes 3rd day of period which lasts 5 days. Cycle duration is 27 days on average. I am trying to conceive but having no egg white cervical mucus. Only watery around 14th day. I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism 45 days back but symptoms were there since last 2 years. After taking thyronine 50mcg last 2 periods were lighter. My question is am I ovulating or not? I used ovulation kit at home but it was negative.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Profuse bleeding with clots is a sign of low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). Similarly hormonal imbalance with absence of ovulation can cause such problem. Also problems like uterine fibroid, cervical polyp can lead to such profuse bleeding with clots.

Egg white slippery cervical mucus is a indication of ovulation and fertile days. Absence of such mucus indicates testing for ovulation study/ovarian and thyroid hormone assessment and pituitary hormone estimation like FSH and OH for finding ovulation problem cause.

Thanks.
