What Causes Heavy Bleeding After A Long Absence Of Periods?

I am 50 yrs old. I stopped having periods at least 10 plus yrs ago. Doctor never knew why, just said to consider myself lucky. Now, last week after urinating when I wiped it was bright red blood. This continued throughout the day. The bleeding/spotting/cramping was severe enough that I had my husband stop and get me tampons on his way home from work as I hadn t bought anything like that in several years. I consider it to be more spotting now and darker in color. There is more noticeable spotting when I insert the toilet paper inside, and not so much in urine. Should I be concerned that after several years of nothing, I am not experiencing this?
