What Causes Heartburn And Back Pain Post Intake Of Spicy Food?

I woke up last night with heart burn. We've eaten quite a few spicy foods this week end. Just a few minutes ago I had crushing chest and back pain. It finally subsided with Tums and water. Should I have called 911 or be concerned now that it has subsided?

Hi,

As per your complain heartburn and pain in chest and back post intake of spicy food is most commonly due to Acid reflux or GERD. I would suggest you to consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like upper GI Endoscopy can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

You can be advised to take Proton Pump Inhibitors like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole. Take antacids like Milk of magnesia. Avoid spicy food and drink plenty of water. Always take walk after meals and take your dinner at least 2 hours before sleep. You should sleep with head slightly raised as compared to feet.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
