What Causes Heart Palpitations With Rate Variability?

Hello, my skipped beats seem to be doubling up... a skipped beat followed by a skipped beat. So there is up to two seconds between beats... this lasts for several seconds, then back to just a skipped beat every few seconds for a while. Lasts for a couple hours daily. Any ideas?

Hi,

The skipped beat you are telling looks like ectopic beats (extra beats from part of heart other than the normal conducting system).

It could be normal or could be because of some underlying heart disease. To establish the diagnosis and further treatment I'll first advise you to get an ECG, 2D Echo and 24hr Holter monitoring (continuous ECG monitoring for 24hr).

Whether you require any treatment will depend on the result of these tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Sameer Maheshwari, Cardiologist
