Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 76 years old. Excellent health. As I've aged, my high frequency hearing has slowly gotten worse and is now degraded to the point that I have trouble understanding speech in noisy environments. What interests me is the following: if I hold my nose and blow to build up pressure to the point where one or both ears "pop", I notice a brief but significant improvement in my high frequency hearing. If I do this experiment when in the shower, my hearing of the high frequency sound of the running water improves dramatically but the effect lasts only about a second. Does what I've described give you a clue as to what I can do to improve my high frequency hearing on a continuing basis?
I understand from your query that you are having high frequency hearing loss which is a common problem as we all get older. The hearing cells that detect high frequency die off. When you change the pressure in your ear you are basically putting pressure behind the ear drum that is then transmitted to different frequency. There is no cure for this type of hearing loss. You can purchase hearing aids that help to filter out ambient noise and improve your hearing voices
