What Causes Hearing Loss After Receiving A Novocaine Shot On The Lower Jaw?

I had an injection of novocaine in my lower jaw and I immediately lost my hearing in one ear. I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss. This was well over a year ago. I have absolutely no hearing in that ear and, worse, I have a loud tinnitus ROAR in that ear that never, ever stops. Could the novocaine injection have caused this and is there any way to stop the roar? My e-mail is YYYY@YYYY Thanks so much. Rosie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss is not caused by the Novocaine injection. The condition occurs suddenly without any underlying causes as suggested by the term idiopathic. Tinnitus is also a common association with the hearing loss. Management with a steroid like Prednisone. Some individuals recover in a few days of starting steroid treatment, whereas it may require weeks for others. Tinnitus if problems can be treated with Gabapentin.
