What Causes Headaches While Bending, Laughing, Coughing And Sneezing?

I recently started experiencing tussive headaches caused by bending, laughing, coughing, and sneezing. I feel soreness in the lower back of my head. I have tried taken pain killers and allergy medication but nothing helps. Is there any cure or relief for this? THANKS!

Hi,

It sounds like you may be experiencing what is known as a "cough headache" or "exertional headache." These types of headaches are caused by increased pressure within the skull that can occur when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or strain during activities like bending over. The pain is typically felt at the back of the head and can be severe.

While cough headaches are usually not a cause for concern, it's a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider about your symptoms to rule out any underlying conditions. In some cases, cough headaches can be a symptom of a more serious condition like a brain tumor or aneurysm.

Your healthcare provider may recommend treatment options like taking medication such as indomethacin or making lifestyle changes such as reducing or eliminating activities that trigger your headaches.

Note that self-medicating with over-the-counter painkillers can be dangerous, especially if you are taking them frequently or in large doses. Always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any new medication or supplement.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
