What Causes Headache At Bedtime?

thank you but I think I m not asking the right question. I m a 69 year old male who has smoked for over 54 years and drink 4 to 6 light beers a day --- I know not a very healthy life style. Over the past several days I have started to get a very bad headache when I go to bed after only a few (3 or 4) beers. I have seen a doctor who feels it is a sinus infection and has prescribed a penacelin antibiotic. I m just trying to see if it could be something else. Doctor, I think I ll give the med s a couple more days before I proceed with this. The $ s aren t a problem - I didn t understand at the time I was providing information that there was a charge for the answer... Someone might want tell folks this before they ask questions.

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Have you measured your blood pressure during the headache episodes?
A high blood pressure, could cause this symptomatology.

Does your headache worsen when you band over? Have you had nose discharges lately? Do you have fevers? If the answer to these question were YES, a sinus infection would be possible.

I would like to know more about the characteristics of your headaches:
- location (diffuse or only in one region)
- duration (minutes/hours)
- nature (throbbing or like pressure or a band)
- triggering factors (does it happen when you don't drink alcohol?)

I recommend consulting with a neurologist for a careful physical examination. Some blood lab tests (complete blood count, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes, inflammation tests) are needed to exclude other metabolic or inflammatory causes related to headache.

As the suspicion of a sinus infection was raised by your attending physician, a sinus x ray and a sinus discharge culture would be necessary to rule in/out this possible diagnosis, before starting antibiotics.

Hope to have been helpful!

Regarding the cost, this is a free answer.

Best regards,

Dr. Aida
