What Causes Headache And Burning Sensation On Face After Injecting Steroid?

I got a steroid injection in my right hip for arthritis. The same day I got a headache for 5 days, face flushed, cheeks turned purplish red and burned for 3 days and the incision on the opposite hip from a hip replacement got itchy, tender and quite a bit of swelling which lasted 3 days but it took 2 weeks for the swelling to go down completely. I think that this has to be an allergic reaction to the shot. There was no redness or swelling at the injection site. Is there any internal damage being done and is this common?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query headache and burning sensation on face after injecting steroid because of facial nerve inflammation or impingement. Facial nerve supplies to area around neck, jaw, cheek and head.

Condition like trigeminal neuralgia or side effects of certain medicine as steroid in your case can also cause such symptoms .I would suggest you to visit oral surgeon once and get it examined. Go for mouth stretching exercises. Try to whistle and blow out and blow in.

Take for muscle relaxants to lower down facial swelling and weakness. Your symptoms will resolve its own. If it is really painful then you to go for steroidal injection in trigeminal ganglion from where this nerve arises.

Also visit dentist once and get it examined to rule out nerve compression , neuralgia or other conditions like neuropathy.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
