What Causes Hanging Skin In The Rectum Of An Elderly Person?

hi, thanks for being here. my mom is 77, had 5 children and all of her births were natural. recently she needs help using the bathroom due to her having a mild stroke. when i help her wipe her bottom after she passes stool, i notice that it looks as though there is excess skin hanging out of her rectum. she has no pain, no hard stools or problems passing stool, is it due to her age and having multiple births? thanks in advance

General Surgeon 's  Response
hi.

noted history of "hanging skin" in your mother's rectal area, not associated with any other signs or symptoms. it may be a hemorrhoidal tissue or an excess/loose skin secondary to aging and childbirth. other pathologies, such as organ (vaginal or rectal) prolapse, must also be ruled-out. it is best if you bring her for consultation to a doctor, preferably a general surgeon, for physical examination and clinical evaluation. diagnostics (such as proctoscopy and ultrasound) and management (medical and/or surgical if indications are found) will be directed accordingly.

hope this helps.

good day!!
