What Causes Hamstring Cramps Despite Of Having Lower Back Pain Post Hip Replacement?

My husband has had single and bilaterally severe hamstring cramps-so severe that he can hardly walk. They leave him exhausted, bruised and doesn t sleep well. He has had low back pain for years, had left hip replacement therapy in September. Recently the pain muscle cramps are really taking their toll......?McCardle s or something else....we have to get to the bottom of this soon. thanks.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

It is necessary trying to find the cause of these muscle cramps. For this reason, I recommend consulting first with a neurologist for a physical exam and some tests:
- A lumbar spine X-ray study
- Complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation
- Blood electrolytes
- Vitamin D and vitamin B12 plasma levels.

In the meantime, I recommend taking magnesium supplements 400mg daily and Gabapentin for the cramps.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
