What Causes Hacking Cough?

My father-in-law worked for years in a tire manufacturing plant. He died of an apparent heat attack. Years later, my mother-in-law has developed this hacking cough, like a smoker. She has never smoked. Could this be some residual effect of chemical from his clothes worn in the plant?

Welcome to HCM!
I appreciate your concern for your mother in law's illness.
I am of the opinion that in view of the exposure to tire manfacturing plant which can release a number of toxic substances in the atmosphere causing harmful effects in human beings, this is referred to as Pneumoconiosis.
Apparently the hacking cough that your mother in law is having could be due to occupational hazard (pneumoconiosis) which predominantly affects the lungs.
You are advised to take her for consultation with a doctor for her treatment.

Best regards.
