What Causes Grainy Stools After Taking Amoxicillin?

My 3.5 year old is currently taking Amoxicillin for pink eye and ear infection. Two days after starting to take the meds her stool has been gritty shortly after she eats and has continued this way since Wednesday. Could this be a side effect of the med? I called the doctor who stated to put her on the BRAT diet but now she is becoming lethargic. She is also asking for milk which I know is not part of the diet. She drinks lactose free milk.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Usually some antibiotics disturbs intestinal bacterial flora which can increase frequency of defecation. This is less common side effect of amoxicillin, but present in some individual.

So give her oral rehydration solution (ORS - WHO approved) prepared by dissolving 1 ORS sachet in 1 liter drinking water. However, if there is pus or blood in stool then problem is severe (C. Difficile) and you need to consult physician.

Hope I have answered your query.
