What Causes Gradual Decrease In Eyesight?

I recently lost seventy five percent of my eyesight in my left eye..I went to ER on the third day when it became the worst...Three days later after two MRI'S there was nothing found that was causing my blindness...The eye specialist also did a complete exam and could find nothing..He said it must have been a virus..and my eyesight would return in seven to ten week.. What do you think happened?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for the question!
There are a number of reasons why a patient's vision may be gradually declining. In fact,i agree with your doctor. The fact that your MRI and your exam were ok,means that you dont have any of these causes:cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, compression of optic nerve, cerebrovascular diesease,A progressive neoplastic (eg, choroidal melanoma),Lesions on the optic nerve (eg, optic neuritis, granuloma etc.)So i think that there is a Viral or bacterial infection,or Cryptococcosis which is a fungal infection.Vision often returns to normal within 2 to 3 weeks with no treatment.Corticosteroids given through a vein (IV) or taken by mouth may speed up recovery.
