What Causes Frequent Urination In BP Patients?

HI.... I'm a 40 year old male with high blood pressure and PKD. However i have a concern, I urinate frequently and alot as if I've been holding it for awhile. Is this good or bad? I've had my prostate checked less than a year ago and everything was good. What do you recommend or think my problem is?

thank you!

Hello dear,
Thank you for your question.

In order to define your situation, I need if you are urinating:
- a total amount of urine that is bigger than normal
- or small volumes of urine several times
I would like you to collect your urine of the whole day, and measure the total volume. If it is bigger than 2,5 litres, the condition is called polyuria. Otherwise, you are dealing with frequent urination.

Polycystic Kidney Disease is frequently associated with urinary tract infections. This might be the case if your condition is frequent urination. So, if you have other symptoms like fever, malaise, weakness, flank pain, nausea etc. you should send an urinary specimen for culture in order to determine the causative microorganism and the specific antibiotic.

Polyuria, on the other hand, would make me think of 2 situations:
1- Since you are suffering from high blood pressure, your doctor may have added or increased the dose of a diuretic. If you have recently added (or increased the dose) drugs like: Hydrochlorthiazide, Furosemide, Spironolactone, it is very likely that this is the cause of polyuria. In this case there is nothing to worry about.
2- PKD is a disease where the cysts occupy the functioning units of the kidney. Therefore its natural history is to progress to renal failure, and the rrythm of this progression varies from one person to the other. If this is the case, your kidney is producing larger volumes of urine, which is diluted. The next step is to collect a urine specimen for routine testing, in order to establish the urine concentration. You might need to contact your nephrologist for further examination and treatment.

I hope this helped.
Kind regards,
Dr. Alma
