What Causes Frequent Urination And Rectal Discomfort Post Intake Of Sleep Medication?

Yes I am a 55 year old white male, I took an Otc sleep medication last month. The next day I was urinating like every 15 minutes for the next 24 hours it began to subside over the next week. But l have felt this uncomfortable feeling in my rectum ever since. The Otc sleep med said not to take if you have an enlarged prostate, but to my knowledge I don t have this condition, but could the Oct cause this or is it temporary or what. I have no medical conditions and I am in good health my last physical is about a year and a half old and I am past due but no other symptoms

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The frequent urination with rectal discomfort are part of side effect of sleep medication altering sympathetic pathway. If you can provide the generic name with dosage consumed for the sleep induction, it would be best for predictable guidance. However, at this point, I can tell that effects of the same last for a period of 6-12 hours after intake and return back to normal physiology once the drug is washed out of the system.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
