Facial flushing episodes last 4-7 hours and happen about twice per day. 71 year old woman. Flushing is accompanied by heat, swelling, headache, and elevated blood pressure. Clonodine patch controls the blood pressure spikes (were up to 180 and now don t go above 140). Most flushing is in the cheeks but bad episodes have flushing go into the forehead, and neck as well as the swelling results in eyes almost swollen shut.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of hypertension & are in the menopausal phase. Hot flushing is common in this phase of life because the hormonal changes in the body cause the hypothalamus to become very sensitive to the changes in the body temperatures.

Avoid taking alcohol, smoking & addictions if any. They will trigger the symptoms. Maintain a low BMI.

Hypertension may increase the risk of heart disease. You should visit a GP & get a thorough cardiac check-up done to reduce the risk of developing CAD.

You may need to get HRT done, discuss your symptoms with your gynae. Stay well hydrated & do regular walking/exercises. Take vitamin E, (Evion-400, once daily for 15 days).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
