What Causes Frequent Bowel Movement With Difficulty In Urination?

My boyfriend who is 54 years old has been having 3-4 bowel movements a day. He no sooner eats a meal and he is in the bathroom going. Lately he says he is having trouble urinating in the morning also and thinks that is from a swollen prostrate. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the problem urinating may be related to the prostate but a prostatic examination and a PSA would determine if there are any issues with the prostate.

In terms of the frequent bowel movements, this can be due to: infections, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroid disease, diabetes

To find the cause, he would need stool tests (to check for infections), blood tests (thyroid and complete blood count) and possible imaging of the bowel.

I hope this helps
