What Causes Fluid In Lungs?

My boyfriend s lung x-ray shows a severly obstructed and obstrictive view of his left lung. It also shows fluid build-up in his left lung. He recently had 1700cc. of fluid drained from the same lung two weeks ago. What are the possible causes of this? and does this mean cancer?
