I am a 65 age female I went to have my eyes tested for glasses last year. I was told floater are not good? What causes them. How do I take better care of my eyes? They also said they could see a little cataracts. The doctor yelled a me about my eye care, she made me feel that there is no hope for me? I am worried. I left there feeling that I was never going to see again, and that I needed surgery? Please help me? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best possible way. Do not be scared, I donot agree that there is no hope for you. The condition that you are having is called floaters, that are found in several conditions including:
1. Eye injury or trauma
2. Diabetic Retinopathy
3. Retinal detachment
4. Cataracts
5. Retinal Tear
6. Hemorrhage in back of the eye called vitreous hemorrhage
7. Infections in back compartment of eye

Some of the conditions may be serious. A pointer may be that if you see a shower of floaters and spots, sometimes accompanied by light flashes, you should seek medical attention immediately.

You may need to give a comprehensive history by answering a few more questions pertaining to your condition. You may also require a complete eye examination including fundoscopy and ophthalmoscopy and may also require few tests including blood tests and imaging studies to get to a final diagnosis.

I suggest that you consult a doctor who may investigate you and make a comprehensive management plan for you which may include eye protective devices, medication, surgery, laser therapy and others depending upon the condition.
