Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother (86) is recovering from hemorrhage of brain stem that happened on 18-June-2012. Right now she is at home, in a state of coma - some eye movement; limbs movement in response to pain stimulus. She has trachestomy and PEG for feeding; all vitals are stabilised, blood report is normal etc. She has lot of problem with distended stomach - owing to flatulence. What could be causing this. In her feeds, Potklor (Postassium Chloride) is being given - could this cause flatulence? Her pulse rate stays around 120; earlier it used to around 90.
If this is the comatose condition of the patient then whatever the appearance is there could be due to the vegetative state. The abdomen distention could be due to that only and it may not be flatulence; nursing plays the bigger role here.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Akhtarhusain
