What Causes Flatulence And Abdominal Pain?

Hi I have been struggling with severe flatulence and abdominal pain for a few years now, and have tried several things that have not made any difference. I went to various doctors who recommended gluten free diet (made no changes), lactose free diet (almost made no changes). I was tested for fructose malabsorption but the test showed I do not have it. The frustrating thing is that the healthier I eat, the worse my symptoms are. The worst symptom is severe, foul-smelling gas that starts around noon and goes until I fall asleep. It is almost unbearable and very embarassing. I m beginning to wonder if I have an intolerance to fruit (specifically berries). Do you have any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have history of abdominal pain and flatulence since a few years. Now you are experiencing severe, foul smelling gas. You are suffering from indigestion, liver disorder, IBS, food allergies, peptic ulcer, food poisoning, etc. You are suggested to take plenty of water, stay well hydrated. Avoid constipation. Avoid food that causes constipation like red meat, food that takes long to digest. Take easily digestible boiled food to detox liver. Take liver tonics. Avoid eating spicy oily food, trans food, full fat dairy and raw food.

Take food, fruits and cereals that are well cooked. Get clinically examined by a GP, get blood analysis, urinalysis, Liver function tests and Imaging tests done. The pathology will be detected and you will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, take antacids, PPIs for relief. You can take antispasmodics, one stat when needed. Take home made balanced food. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
