What Causes Fever, cough And Throat Irritation?

hello doctor, good evening, well it pertains to my father. He is suffering from fever since last Friday evening. on Friday it was 102 degree Fahrenheit and after taking pcm it reduced to 99.2degrees. it continue to persists even afterwards also, it varied from 99 to 102 degrees . 10-15 days back my dad had throat irritation and little cough which get cured by salted water gargles .on the advice of my pharmacist friend he has been taking ofloxacin 200mg BD along with CPM and PCM for the last three days. it has been fifth day today since he got fever. after taking pcm it reduces but surges again. is it viral infection or something else? what treatment/investigation is required and also please tell about diet and other precautions. thanking you in anticipation regards Parvinder

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. In my opinion this appears to be a viral infection. Since this started out as a throat infection 2 weeks ago.

If I were his treating doctor I would get him admitted at a hospital for further evaluation with a preliminary diagnosis of fever for evaluation. Any fever persistent for more than 48 hours requires an evaluation and in your father's case it has been 5 days with no improvement in fever. Which means the cause has not been addressed.

He may require blood tests such as complete blood count (includes platelet counts), IgM dengue, QBC malaria and WIDAL test for typhoid. He may also require IV medications and IV antibiotics. I would recommend an antibiotic like a cephalosporin that covers throat infections better rather than ofloxacin that covers gastrointestinal infections. The role of the antibiotic is to prevent any secondary bacterial infection.

Hope he recovers soon.

Do let me know if you have any other questions.
