What Causes Fever, Sulphur Smelling Burps And Diarrhea In A Child?

Hello Dr. Andrew Rynne, My 9 mth. old son has been running a fever, burping (sulfur smelling), and diarrhea (paste like texture). About 3-4 days ago he had this vomiting spell and couldn t drink his formula. So we gave him water at that time he was not doing all of this including a fever. I had him checked for his ears and everything was alright. He does have some teeth coming in. I just hope I can get some help for my little guy.

Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you with thanks for a consult!

I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to the latest medical guidelines.

Teeth eruption is associated to issues like this and fever is very common in such cases.

This is due to the digestive system infection and at this age group it is mostly viral. It is usually self limiting. It takes 7-10 days to completely go away. Make sure he is good on his vaccination schedule especially Rotavirus.

Make sure your little one is wetting the diapers properly. If not, it means he is getting dehydrated. Give him Pedialyte right now as he needs fluids. Don't let his fever go up. Give Tylenol infantile for fever. Cold sponging will help fever relief.

Ask his pediatrician for Ondansetron if he starts vomiting again. Other treatment goes mostly symptomatic. Nothing much to give at this age until unless there is high emergency. In that case you need to take the baby to the ER of nearby hospital.
