What Causes Fever, Cough And Headache In A Child?

My son (11) has had a fever, cough, and headache for 48 hours. His fever was 103.8 for the first 24 hours and now he s running anywhere from normal to 100.8 off and on. His headache only hurts when he coughs. I ve ruled out meningitis since he has no neck pain and no pain when bringing his knees to his chest. Does this sound like the flu?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, it does sound like either the common cough/cold or the flu. Both of these present with similar symptoms but those in the flu are usually may severe or prolonged.

Headache, fever and cough can occur in the common cold.

The flu and cold are treated similarly unless it is a severe form of the flu.

Paracetamol or tylenol can be used for the fever along with cool liquids and tepid sponging (with room temp water not cold water which would cause shivering).
The medication can be given regularly for 24 to 48 hours.

There are also over the counter cough and cold medications that may help as well.

I hope this helps
