What Causes Fatty Liver?

I just had my gallbladder removed a week ago and during surgery they took samples of my liver. No cancer but I was told I have fatty liver disease. I go to a liver specialist in Jan. but I am more concerned because my mother died of cirrhosis and never drink but was a diabetic. Until I am seen, I want to make sure I eat the right foods and start the process of treating my liver, loosing weight and feeling better. I do not want to die like my mom. I am hoping that my doctors have not let this problem go unnoticed to long. I have had intestinal problems my whole life and I am scared. what can I do now until I know what stage the disease is in?
