What Causes Fatigue Following Throat Infection?

Two months ago I had strep throat, but the doctor did not diagnosed it. 10 days later I had an abscess/wound on the side of my throat (my mother says this is called quinsy). I was treated with roxythromycin, but had to stop after 4 days due to severe side effects. A week later, a new abscess/wound formed lower down, on the same side, which was trewated with fusafungin, which I also had to terminate after three days. I experienced throat trauma due to this last antibiotic treatment. Extreme druness with swallow spasms. All the swallow muscles ached incredibly for a week. Then I had one nice week, and then my throat flared up again. Very swollen. Nerve pain into the ear. Mostly on the left side. I went back to the ENT and he gave me an injection, which I presume must have been either steroids or cortisone. That gave my relief and very fast. I feel very very fatigued, with vague pain in my throat. Another strange symptom that appeared from the beginning was gout-like symptoms in both feet, but more on the left. Every time I flare up, my toe joints hurt. What is this fatigue?

Hi,

Your history is suggestive of the following:
- You might have developed quinsy that is peri-tonsillar abscess that has tracked down the para-pharyngeal space to open up on the outside.
- Unless the abscess is well drained it can recur.
- Needs Culture and sensitivity of the pus to get the direction for the best antibiotics for such a condition.
- Good anti-inflammatory medicines are a must.
- The fatigue is due to the septicaemia.
- The septicaemia causes some compounds which can show symptoms mimicking gout.
- Get the CT scan of the neck to know the present status.
- Surgical intervention if there is residual abscess.
- Complete the course till cured well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
