What Causes Fatigue And Poor Cognitive Function When Suffering From Liver Disease?

Hi, I had been diagnosed with End-Stage Liver Disease in May 2015. Yesterday after months of battling all of the symptoms that go with the disease I receive a second opinion from a transplant surgeon stating that my Meld score was around 11....still don t know what that means, and that a transplant ma actually increase my risk of death. MY LFT s have been back to normal for two to three months now. I went home very confused after really receiving no answers. I still suffer from severe fatigue, decreased chronic cognitive function, slurred speech and pain predominately URQ pain with no radiation and flank pain that is very throbbing and radiates across my adbdomine. No one knows why I m still having this pain. Today I get a phone call from the specialist that I need to stop taking my water pills immediately and follow up with my FMD. 2 weeks ago my Creatine was 90, yesterday it was 160. I VE LOST SO MUCH COGNITIVE FUNCTION, COMPREHENSION ETC that I don t know what this means. What are the normal levels and what could this sudden change be caused by? I m so stressed out. Can you please help.

Hi,

You have been diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and the surgeon said that transplant of liver could be fatal.

Your questions were:
1. "my Meld score was around 11....still don t know what that means"
2. "I VE LOST SO MUCH COGNITIVE FUNCTION, COMPREHENSION ETC that I don t know what this means."
3. "What are the normal levels and what could this sudden change be caused by?"

My answers:
1. Your MELD score means that you have a risk mortality up to 3 months 6.0%.
2. Severe liver disease as yours cause this chronic fatigue and poor cognitive function, because some metabolits are higher and dangerous for the brain. End-stage liver disease has complications like encephalopathy and hepato-renal syndrome.
3. High levels of cretinine indicates severe kidney impairment. Normal levels of creatinine in the blood are approximately 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams (mg) per deciliter (dL) in adult males and 0.5 to 1.1 milligrams per deciliter in adult females. In high levels of cretinine, a dialysis machine removes wastes from the blood. It could be a primary kidney impairment or due to end-stage liver disease that is complicated to hepato-renal syndrome.

Ask me for more.
