What Causes Fatigue And Black Out?

My husband is 56 years old, 6 feet tall, weighs approximately 250 pounds, and currently takes no medication. He has been experiencing fatigue, light-headedness and dizziness. He had these same symptoms about 3 to 4 years ago. He actually collapsed at work back then, and so his primary who sent him to a specialist, they ran a bunch of tests and couldn t find anything wrong with him. He is leary of doctors and is waiting for his next blackout/collapse before seeking medical attention. Do you have any idea what could be causing these symptoms? Should he seek medical attention before his next collapse/blackout?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would recommend you to check your husband's blood pressure morning and evening using an automatic blood pressure monitor, or else get checked at a pharmacy nearby, and make note of it for a couple of days. The feeling of light-headedness and dizziness could be caused due to decrease in blood pressure. Other causes of syncope or blackouts are prolonged standing, transient ischemic attacks, decreased blood glucose levels to name a few. Since, the diagnostic test ran on your husband were clear; it would be better to wait and watch.

In meantime, you can regularly monitor his blood pressure, and blood glucose levels to keep a record of possible reasons of symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
