What Causes Fast Heart Rate?

I was drinking ice water through a straw, and drank half a glass very quickly. Suddenly my heart rate was faster than I could count. This lasted about 30 seconds and then slowed. It has happened 3 times in the last 8 months. I have an appt in 2 weeks, should I be seen sooner?
