What Causes Fall Of Platelet Count In New Born?

Friends newborn is a 2 wks old platelet count is 42,000. It started to go up but dropped again today. She had what I though was purpura but family didn't call it that. Dr is concerned about liver function. What causes this. It was a high risk pregnancy requiring bed rest for several months.

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Need to get a repeat platelet count. If still low, to avoid risk of internal bleeding, platelet transfusion might be necessary.
2. Blood culture to rule out septicemia is necessary. Would not expect ITP at this age. Need to look into possible DIC.
3. Liver function could be affected, however, it would not affect platelet count directly. PT, APTT will confirm whether liver function is affecting hemostasis. Pregnancy would not affect platelet count unless, it has contributed to septicemia.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
