What Causes Extreme Pain In The Toes Of The Right Foot?

I am having extreme pain in my 3rd and 4th toes on my right foot. This started last week with a feeling of numbness in my 4th toe and then a few days ago sharp, burning pain that comes and goes. I have been wearing a boot thinking it was hyperextended but I just woke up from a nap with the intense pain again and my foot was at rest. Any ideas what is going on? I am a 60 year old female who is in good health. I do have plantar Facititis in that foot that comes and goes but have never had anything like this before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
The symptoms you describe sound like Morton Neuroma which occurs as a result of an injury to a nerve and commonly affect the nerve that travel between the third and fourth toes. The causes of this condition are unknown but believed to be related to wearing tight shoes/high heels, abnormal positioning of toes, flat feet, forefoot problems and high foot aches.
Other causes of the symptom may include:
-diabetic neuropathy,
-peripheral neuropathy
-metabolic problems like ionic problems like low calcium and magnesium
-Stress fracture
-Over weight
-It could also be an after effect or a sequel of plantar fascitis.
-Infection but less likely given your symptoms
With all these possibilities, i will advise you get the leg examined by a Doctor and if need be, tests will be requested.Pain medication like ibuprofen may help you feel better while you prepare to see the Doctor.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
