What Causes Excessive Weight Gain While Suffering From Neurosarcoidosis?

My 32-year-old son-in-law is currently at Wake Forest medical in North Carolina he was diagnosed with neurosarcoidosis in 2013. He has passed out in the last 24 hours two times within three hours and was taken to the emergency room and is currently under the supervision of a neurological specialist. They said at first he was dehydrated ,because he presented with more inflamation in the brain as seen on his MRI on July 24. They are currently treating his symptoms with 40 mg of prednisone. He has gained 50 pounds in the last three years because of the prednisones and is depressed and now can hardly function at work as a construction safety engineer. His wife my Dtr. Is an Rn. And is demanding answers. They have ruled out that is adrenal gland was not functioning. Hospital also didn t ultrasound of his heart and I am not sure of his results. My daughter knows being a nurse that massive doses of prednisone given to patients is what do wihen they do not know exactly what they re treating. We are looking for answers. We want to treat the cause of NEUROLOGIICAL sarcoidosis and not the symptoms. can you help us.....

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hello,

Prednisolone is a very good drug for inflammation of the neural tissue but unfortunately weight gain is one of its bad side effects . if the diagnosis is sarcoidosis and he is really reacting to steroids you can consult the neurologist to start on amtimetabolic drugs . They also have their own set of side effects dear but maybe he might respond to them better than steroids as each patient is different and maybe the side effect profile be better for him with these drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
