What Causes Excessive Weight Gain After Taking Pravastatin?

I started taking Pravastatin 5 months ago and within 8-12 weeks, picked up 10 pounds. I ve cut back on my calories and workout 5 mornings a week. I am 54 and have always been fit. I picked up 10 pounds from my 40-50 s but this next 10 pounds, came quickly after starting pravastatin. Any thoughts on if there is a connection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Excessive weight gain is not associated with Pravastatin.

Used in the treatment of high blood cholesterol levels, the most common side effects of Pravastatin include myopathy (muscle pain, tenderness or weakness), stomach upset and inflammation of the liver.

It is unlikely to cause excessive weight gain.

Kindly consult your treating doctor for further evaluation and to rule out other causes of weight gain such as hormonal problems such as hypothyroidism, cushing's disease, etc.

Hope this will help.
