Hello,
I understand your concern.
Excessive sweating can be very frustrating and socially embarrassing. This is a condition of unknown causes and happens when the nerves responsible for triggering the glands that produce sweat become oversensitive and cause the glands to produce sweat even when not necessary.
There are two types of excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) the primary type, where there is no known medical condition to cause it, and the secondary type, caused by an underlying disease such as diabetes,
heart disease,
hyperthyroidism, obesity, stress,
tuberculosis etc.
If your son has always suffered from excessive sweating and this is not a new finding, then
primary hyperhidrosis is most probably the case here.
The treatment can be topical or systemic. Topical treatment consists of antichilinergics, methenamine, boric acid, resorcinol, potassium permanganate and
tannic acid solutions. However, all of these have side effects such as skin irritation, staining, limited effectiveness and short lasting.
Systemic treatment includes anticholinergics (not preferred due to side effects), sedatives and indonethacin.
Other ways of treatment which have proven quite effective are Botox injections, which are quite effective.
Another method is
iontophoresis, which consists of passing a direct current through the skin. Although questionable, it has proven to be effective.
Ultimately it is up to your son and his doctor to decide on the treatment that works best for him.
Wishing both of you good health and all the best.
