What Causes Excessive Salivation While Suffering From Flu?

Hi, I am currently sick with probably the flu and it seems that every time I am sick I always salivate excessively and im not sure how to stop it because every 30 or so seconds I am having to spit it out. I cant swallow it because it makes me feel sick and its not the same normal consistency saliva is. I feel that it is leading to me getting phlem and mucus. How can I stop it?

Hello,

As per your complain excessive saliva production or hypersalivation especially, during flu can be felt in 2 cases:
1. Due to increased production
2. Due to reduced swallowing.

Saliva overproduction can cause irritation in throat caused during cold and flu that can cause stimulation or hyperactivation of the salivary glands that leads to an increased production of saliva. Decreased swallowing can occur due to throat pain caused by infection in throat and tonsillitis etc. Along with it mucous and phlegm formation can change the consistency of saliva making it thick and infected. You should consult an oral physician and get evaluated and a thorough checkup will help in confirming the exact cause that whether it is due to flu or not and treatment of the cause will solve the problem.

As of now you can frequently use mouthwash and brushing teeth as it has a drying effect in mouth.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Honey Arora
