Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Excessive Hair Loss While On Levothyroxine?
Hi Dr. Rynne. I am experiencing some very noticeable hair loss. It is beginning to concern me. I have been taking Levothyroxine since my late 20 s (I m 68 this month). My last visit with my PCP was this summer and I had annual blood work drawn and my TSH level was within normal limits. I take a female hormone supplement daily. Is this normal?
Hair loss may be due to many causes like hyper/hypothyroidism or anemia or b12 deficiency or major illness (telogen effluvium)or hormonal or steroidal intake etc.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Check your hemoglobin status, serum b12, and zinc levels.
Use biotin,b12, zinc and selenium tablet if necessary. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
