What Causes Enlarged Ventricles In An Unborn Child?

I am 33 years old and pregnant with my second child. At my 20 week sonogram I was told that the babies ventricles were enlarged measuring 11mm and 13mm. I get another US on Monday. They did not identify any other anomalies during the ultrasound and my nuchal scan and blood work ruled out other syndromes. What is the likelihood that the ventricle will decrease in size and the prognosis for this unborn baby?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Large ventricles of the fetuses can be due to a heart defect. The prognosis is closely dependant on the kind of the heart defect the baby is having.
Many such problems, when diagnosed on time, are treated with surgery after birth and provide a good prognosis for the child.

In conclusion, the doctors will still need to follow up the child and determine the cause of the enlargement and possibly will operate after birth to correct the defect .

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
