What Causes Enlarged Tonsils And White Spots In The Throat?

Hi Dr My right tonsil has been enlarged for a week now and has white spots all over it and at the back of my throat. I have a doctors appointment in a few days and was wondering whether I should just live with the pain until then or get to the emergency room as soon as possible for the threat of strep throat? I've also had a fever the whole time and it has gotten as high as 104 I've been taking ibuprofen but it doesn't do much. If you could get back to me asap it would be much appreciated thank you! And I'm 17 6'2 140 and no serious health conditions before this.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain it seems that swollen tonsil along with white spots over it are due to Follicular tonsillitis along with Pharyngitis that seems most commonly due to bacterial infection..
I would suggest you to take a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprfen, do warm saline gargles, steam inhalation..
You can suck throat lozenges.
Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..
Sip on plenty of warm water throughout the day..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods and take a soft diet with plenty of warm fluids..
In case of no resolution in a week consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can do a clinical evaluation and also investigations like throat swab culture to confirm the cause and treat accordingly..
