What Causes Elevation In ALT Levels Post Alcohol Withdrawal?

Recently I had blood results back I was drinking heavy which has lead me to stopping completely. My liver function ast results were 309 and alt was 161. Since then I have had another blood test and my ast as went down to 213 in 2 weeks but my alt has went up to 177 . I thought due to me stopping drinkinking my alt would go down instead up ??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Two weeks is a small time frame to determine how the liver function tests are from stopping using alcohol. It is a very good decision you took to stop alcohol, you should continue with it and just follow up on the liver function tests in a few months. It may take months for the liver to settle and recover from the damage alcohol has already caused.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
