What Causes Elevated Pulse Rate?

Hi, I have arresting pulse rate of 114 but can be as high as 120. Recently my blood pressure has been taken at the hospital before a procedure and was high. I went to my GP today for a B12 injection as my levels are low again and started to feel unwell in the waiting room. I felt faint and my heart was racing. The nurse took blood pressure which was 170/90 and pulse was 114. I did feel better after some fresh air but should I be worried about this?

Hello,

I can see that your blood pressure remains high and high blood pressure is one of the causes for high pulse rate or tachycardia.

Tachycardia is a fast or irregular heart rhythm, usually more than 100 beats per minute. At these elevated rates, the heart is not able to efficiently pump oxygen-rich blood to your body.

Other Causes of tachycardia include:

Poor blood supply to the heart muscle due to coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, heart failure, heart muscle disease, tumours, or infections.

Other medical conditions such as thyroid disease, certain lung diseases, electrolyte imbalance, and alcohol or drug abuse, emotional stress or drinking large amounts of alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.

You have not mentioned whether you are experiencing tachycardia on a regular basis.

If it is regularly bothering you then you will have to seek treatment for it.

Your heart doctor will determine the treatment that's best for your condition.

So I will suggest consulting a heart physician for treatment options if any.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
