What Causes Elevated Prolactin Level?

Hello. I haven t had a period for the past 4 months. Went to my gyno and had some tests done . My prolactin level is elevated slightly, at 30. Would this cause ovulation to stop? What causes prolactin to raise ? I m 23 and not sexually active, so no I m not pregnant . Does elevated prolactin lead to infertility ? I ve also been getting a lot of migrains..

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to be suffering from hyperprolactinemia - a condition of elevated prolactin levels in blood which could be due to tumors in the pituitary tumor (adenomas), hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome, certain medications like anti-psychotics, antidepressants, oral contraceptive pillss, methyldopa, and metoclopramide.

Hyperprolactinemia can cause irregular menses, amenorrhea, galactorrhea, and infertility. Sometimes it's exact cause may not be detected. You are advised to consult your doctor to rule out possible causes as mentioned above by certain lab tests and to treat it by using medications like bromocriptine or cabergoline.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
