What Causes Elevated Levels Of ALT And AST And How To Lower Them?

I have a 9 year old who has high ALT levels at 44 (normal I was told is 5-25) and a AST level of 32 (normal being 10-37). She does not use alcohol, take medications or have hepatitis. What can cause these elevated levels? What do we do to lower them?

Hi...this level of liver enzymes which you have mentioned are not very abnormal. In the absence of jaundice and other markers of hepatitis you need not worry about them.

If the kid is active otherwise and with normal appetite - do not worry the current levels of AST and ALT which you have mentioned.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
