What Causes Elevated Heart Rate After Blood Donation?
Hello I am 18, 5 5 and 145lbs. I donated blood today and have had a very fast heart rate all day. My resting rate is 102 or higher and just getting up and walking to another room makes me so winded and bumps my pulse up to over 120. I had to go up and down stairs twice and my pulse got well over130 and I couldn t breathe and had to sit down.
Blood donation can not physically cause an increased heart rate but it can be due to high stress levels after blood donation which led to increased heart rate. Sometimes heart rate increases as a compensatory mechanism after loosing blood to maintain flow to the rest of the body. Since you have complains of breathlessness too, it is important for you to get an urgent 12 lead ECG done, to rule out any arrhythmias.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Hiba Tehrim, General & Family Physician
